When Space City Yarn began, it was just a dream—a dream fueled by a love for fiber, a fascination with texture, and the desire to build something meaningful. Over time, we realized that our work could be more than just a creative outlet; it could be a platform for change. Fiber arts have long been a medium for activism, giving rise to the powerful movement known as “Craftivism.”

Craftivism, a blend of craft and activism, is the practice of using handcrafts to advocate for social or political change. At Space City Yarn, we believe that fiber arts have the power to bring communities together, raise awareness, and inspire action. Every stitch can be a statement. Every project can be a symbol of solidarity.

Threads Of Activism

Throughout history, fiber arts have played a role in activism. From protest banners to knitted symbols of resistance, makers have used their skills to support causes they care about. This spirit of activism continues today, and we are proud to be part of it. Space City Yarn aims to not only provide materials but also to empower makers to use their craft for good.

We see countless opportunities to support our community through fiber arts. Whether it’s creating items for local charities, knitting hats and scarves for those in need, or collaborating with local artists who advocate for change, we can all contribute to a better world through our work.

One collaboration we’re particularly excited about is with local artist Abi Carroll. Abi is a talented creator we met through the What It’s Like Project, an initiative that seeks to remove the stigma of mental health issues through music and art. Together, we’re introducing a unique set of vulva stitch markers designed to celebrate creativity, inclusivity, and individuality. This partnership reflects our shared belief that fiber arts can be a powerful medium for both expression and advocacy. The vulva stitch markers will be available for purchase soon on our website, and we are thrilled to offer a product that not only supports a local artist but also promotes important conversations within our community.

Ideas for Getting Involved

If you’re inspired to join the craftivism movement, there are many ways to get started:

Collaborate with Local Artists: Partner with artists and makers in your area who are using their work to promote awareness and change.

Craft for a Cause: Knit or crochet items to donate to local charities or organizations supporting those in need.

Raise Awareness Through Your Projects: Use your fiber art creations to spark conversations about causes you care about, whether it’s through colors, patterns, or symbolism.

Support Activist Makers: Purchase handmade goods from artists and makers who are advocates for important causes. By supporting their work, you contribute to their mission.

Local Craftivism Opportunities

Houston’s diverse population provides fertile ground for craftivism to thrive, with opportunities to engage in projects that support local social justice causes.

Organizations like the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft offer exhibitions, educational programs, and residencies that highlight the intersection of craft and social issues, inspiring artists to use their medium as a vehicle for change. Groups such as Houston Stitching Together foster collaboration and creative activism by bringing fiber artists together to work on large-scale projects aimed at amplifying voices and sparking conversations. These local initiatives reflect Houston’s spirit of community, innovation, and solidarity, making craftivism a powerful tool for expression in the city.

Looking Ahead: Crafting for Change

As we continue to grow, we are excited to expand our efforts in craftivism. While we don’t have specific events planned just yet, we see incredible potential for organizing community crafting events, donation drives, and workshops in the future. We believe that fiber arts can be a powerful tool for change, and we invite you to join us in this mission. Whether it’s through supporting a local cause, purchasing items that support activism, or simply starting a conversation, every action counts.

At Space City Yarn, we are weaving a story of advocacy, community, and creativity. Each thread represents a cause, a collaboration, or a step forward in our mission to support those around us.
